Being that August 2nd is National Ice Cream Sandwich Day…I thought it would be appropriate to share Marion’s influence on the world of ice cream bars and sandwiches. Did you know that Marion, Ohio has a very big connection to the world-famous Klondike Bar? I may have been the only one in the dark since I only came to Marion 8 years ago to start my business as a chiropractor but, I just found this news out.
Many of you may remember the old Isaly’s Shoppe here in Marion. The Isaly’s dairy specialist’s had several stores all over the country…but the last one that existed was in Marion, OH. You may know that it closed in the mid-1990’s. I’ve heard people recently say…there’s no more good ice cream in town…ever since Isaly’s left. Do you agree with that? Comment and let me know what ice cream you love in Marion!
What I didn’t know about Isaly’s was that their first expansion that they did was into Marion back in 1914. They quickly modernized their plant here in Marion and grew and grew from there.
It was in 1922 that Isaly’s introduced the Klondike bar. Named for the Klondike river in Alaska and Canada. So the Klondike Bar can be traced back to a company that grew out of Marion…I think that’s pretty cool!
Another interesting fact was that in Marion, Isaly’s fielded an amateur basketball team that played against the Marion, Ohio based Jim Thorpe and His World-Famous Indians and the Buffalo Silents – a team composed of deaf/mute players.
The more I learn about Marion, the more I realize it has some amazing history, and that it is a great place to live. Which is why my wife and I will be moving up here as soon as our house sells.
There are a lot of great things about Marion…lets focus on those things and make it an even better place to live.
